It sucks you in and then shows you how to eat Oreos with a fork.

I may be ruined forever.

Happy Independence Day

Of course I'm a day late. I had way too many irons in the fire yesterday.

The day started with Mom coming over to help do up a dozen jars of peach jam. This is a lot darker than the other, but just as yummy.

Mom and Annie and her family came over and ate with us. After dinner we went out on the back patio and visited in the rain. I don't know anyone that wasn't wet when we got done. I enjoyed it, even the being soggy part. After Annie and crew left we went and watched the fireworks. Nothing too exciting this year. Low key and relaxed, just the way I like it.

I hope each of you had a wonderful Independence Day.

Waffle Hair uh, I mean House

Some times life is funny, but then again, not so much.

I'd never ever eaten at a Waffle House until today. Chances are I'll never ever eat at one again. I'm plowing through my breakfast like a farm hand when I spy a hair. I think to myself, hmmm looks like a cat hair, so I start to pull it off the plate. But, it just keeps coming and it's not a cat hair. Ick! That son of a gun was a good 6 to 9 inches long and under half of my food. Gag. Never again. The good news, I didn't blow my diet eating at the Waffle House on Meridian.

I got Mom dropped off at the airport for her impromptu trip to South Carolina. My baby sister's been having some problems and Mom's going to take care of her and try bring her home for a little while. They should be home Saturday.

DH's dad has decided to check himself and MIL out of the nursing home on May 1st so they can spend the summer in the mountains. I hope to Pete it works out okay because that room will go fast and I don't know where they'll lay their heads at night if there's a problem.

DH's dad also insists that you don't have to pay taxes on interest and dividends. Hello? If I get a 1099I or 1099D I'm declaring it and paying the taxes whether he likes it or not. This has turned into a huge debacle and I refuse to participate any longer.

In house news, the wall between the living and dining room is almost finished and I'm nearly done with the dining room ceiling. I'm shooting towards having all of the mud work done by Friday night so I can sand Saturday or Sunday. I'd love to be texturing come Monday.

I've got a crick in my neck, a rip-roaring case of bronchitis, and enough drama to float a boat. I'm not whining. Just telling it like it is.

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a wonderful start to 2009. I have high hopes for the coming year.

Today was a busy day and it felt really good. DH is getting ready to go hunting again and so he's been preoccupied with gathering his stuff up so he can leave tomorrow.

I managed to get the tree down and the living room back in order. I still need to muscle the boxes down to the basement, but overall I got a lot done.

We took the kids swing set down and moved it over to my sisters so now my yard can recover and I'll have a new spot for the porch swing this summer.

I got the Christmas quilt top finished this afternoon. It took about 15 minutes. Don't laugh. I may try quilting it tomorrow if I can find my backing fabric. I'll be ready next Christmas. My poor sewing machine didn't remember me and wouldn't cooperate for a bit. We're friends again and ready to sew.

Mom came over for dinner and I filled her up on black-eyed peas, fried okra, cornbread, onions, and tomatoes. For desert we had spiced peached cobbler from the peaches I canned this summer. Good stuff.

Since today is also Thankful Thursday I'd better put it out there. I'm thankful that I get to see 2009. I'm thankful that I have a husband who loves me and puts up with my nonsense. I'm thankful for my mom who also loves me and puts up with me. Overall I'm a very blessed person and for that I'm so very thankful.

Are you ready?

I'm nearly there. The shopping is done. Hallelujah!

I've got the buffet set up, ready for the snack stuff tomorrow. I'm skipping breakfast and going straight for the cheese ball and mini crab quiche. Then I'm moving to the bacon and cheddar pinwheels, deer dip, and fudge for lunch. Mid afternoon, if there's any room left, I'll have a rum ball or two and sausage cheese balls. Can you tell what I enjoy the most? Eating!

For dinner we're going south of the border and having Mexican food. Enchiladas, beans, Spanish rice, tacos, salsa, and guacamole if I can rouse myself to get the avocados before the store closes.

Have a happy holiday!

Let's plan a party

We're having a backyard party on 5/10 to celebrate my graduating college. Hooray!

There are a few things we need to have a good time, food, fun, and for my in-laws not to come. Okay, that was tacky, but even DH admits it.

We're crossing our fingers that it doesn't rain and it's pretty enough to be outside the whole day. The thought of being trapped in my house with all of those people makes me break out in hives. I don't like crowds and I define crowds as more than six people at a time. We're expecting something like 20 people.

Mom and I sat down and figured out the menu and who's doing what. Right now the menu looks like this:
Brisket (Mom cooking)
German sausage
Green salad
Baked beans
Potato salad
Corn
Yeast rolls
Pickles, peppers, and onions
Chocolate cake (mom baking)
Dump cake (mom baking)
Fruit salad
Homemade ice cream (DH in charge)
Iced tea and lemonade

I think we've got the food covered unless somebody can see something we've forgotten.

So, now we're down to the fun. I don't want a bunch of whiney kids hollering they're bored. On the same hand, I don't want to sit around and listen to gossip from the in-laws about the rest of the family. We'll set up the croquet course and probably the badminton net. What else do we need?

Water balloons? Water guns? Relay races?

What would you do? Help me out here.

Ringing in the New Year

Happy New Year to all of my blogging friends.

We celebrated at home with family last night. Good food, board games, and lots of laughs.

My sister sat her egg nog on the washer while she took clothes out of the dryer and Mr. Fuzz snuck a drink.

Doesn't he look satisfied with himself?

This morning I woke up bright and early (4:30) to a calf bawling outside my bedroom window. Huh? A calf? Yep, right in the middle of good old Weatherford. I jumped up, threw on my housecoat, and headed outside to see what was going on.

Poor baby! A little bitty black calf was standing out of the wind, bawling for his mama, and when I came around the corner he took off. So I did the neighborly thing and called the police. I didn't want him to get hit by a car.

We nearly had him, but then a sweet young police officer tripped on his own feet, scared the calf and he took off again.

By 7:30 the police still didn't have him caught and I was tired of flapping around in my housecoat in the cold North wind so I came in the house.

At one point we had four police cars, a sherriff's department car, and Fire & Rescue on the side and front streets by my house, all with lights flashing and at least one door standing open. It looked really bad.

The last time I saw the calf he was headed West at a dead run.

By noon all of the cars were gone. I wonder if they caught him?
