Veggies and thrifty shopping

I got up this morning a bit bleary eyed after yesterday's black-eyed pea canning session (20 pints). I pulled myself up by my bootstraps and forged on.

My first stop was the farmer's market. All I bought was tomatoes and a couple of cantaloupe.
Mom called and met me at the house and after a quick breakfast we went thrifting.

I found this mop bucket for $1. Please ignore my dirty kitchen floor. Obviously this was a much needed purchase.
This little bird cage was a steal at $5, according to the antique shops in town.
88 balls of crochet/tatting thread for $5 plus a pattern for a bedspread and two crochet hooks.
21 fat quarters for $3.
A salad spinner from France for $1.
I also bought DH some t-shirts, myself a house dress and pair of overalls all for $1.30 and six cups for mis-matched snack sets for 30 cents. I'm sure there are other things, but I can't remember them now.

We made a full day of it and I'm pooped, but I sure did have fun.

Adventures on Saturday

I received a gift card to Hobby Lobby for graduation and it was burning a hole in my pocket.Now I have a few new toys. I picked up the fat quarters for the Stars Quilt-along and the larger cut is for the backing.

Mom and I were dropped off at Hobby Lobby while DH headed for Bass Pro. Now you know that's going to take a while. Once we were done at HL, we strolled down to Hancock Fabrics to see what kind of trouble we could get into. We finished there and still no husband so we walked out to the plant sale in the parking lot. Mom found two gorgeous hanging baskets and I found a banana pepper.

I finally just called him to see where in the heck he was and when he would be around to pick us up. A little bit. That was my answer. We ladies ended up waiting in front of an empty store, visiting, and admiring our purchases. To be fair, he lost a lot of looking time driving across town and back. Still, I think next time, we'll drop him off and then go shopping.

A day off

My husband had a rare Saturday off so we enlisted my mom to watch the kids and we ran away to OKC for the day.

DH needed new boats seats so we spent 3 hours in Bass Pro Shop. He picked out the seats he wanted in the first 10 minutes. The next 2 hours and 50 minutes were spent wandering the store just looking. I think my eyes only rolled to the back of my head once.

We drove out to Lake Hefner and I got to see the pelicans, Canadian Geese, Ring-billed Gulls, and Great Blue Heron.

A quick lunch and then a stop at Hancock Fabrics. Out of the entire store the only thing that tempted me was a bundle of fat quarters.









Overall we had a very nice day together. We don't get a lot of time as a couple and we cherish the time we do have.

I don't want to do any crafting right now. I think it's because the guest room is such a mess and I'm anticipating my new sewing/craft room. I guess I'll just have to paint walls and move furniture to fulfil my creative urges for now.

A shopping we did go

On New Year's Eve, Mom, little sister, and myself went shopping.

I brought all kinds of good stuff home that I now need to find a place to stash.

I went in search of muslin. For some reason I use a ton of the stuff and I have a real aversion to paying more than $1 a yard for it. I found a 15 yard bolt for $13 and was tickled.

A new pair of scissors, several fat quarters, a rotary blade sharpener, stabilizer, and embroidery thread all followed me home. Funny how that happens. I'm sure there was other stuff, but can't recall what right now.

The embroidery thread was a great deal at Hobby Lobby on clearance. Regularly $3.49 a spool, I found this for $1.33 and $1.22 a spool and got one of each color.

Did I share that my dear husband bought me a small embroidery machine for Christmas? I think I forgot. He did and I love it.

What a day

Sam had a doctor's appointment in OKC today so we spent most of the day running around up there.

Let me just say, if the road crews are working on a road and have it closed, I would dearly appreciate them putting the 'Road Closed' sign further out so I don't drive down the said closed road and have to figure out how to get turned around. Boy did I feel stupid and I wasn't even in OKC yet. LOL!

Construction was just crazy all over town and I don't do crazy.

The good news, he doesn't have to go back to the doctor unless something comes up later on with his ADHD. She's very impressed that he's being homeschooled and doing so well. We are blessed!

I had the opportunity to do a little bit of shopping so I took it. I wouldn't drive 75 miles to shop any other time so I thought I was doing a good thing.

I got this fabric to make my chef-to-be sister an apron. It just screamed her name. I found the recipe print at Hobby Lobby. and the olive print I found at Hancock Fabrics as a remnant.













Sam, being a 9 year old little boy, found the only glass shelf with a corner broken off in the whole store and cut his arm as he walked by. Hobby Lobby will be receiving a box of Band-Aids for Christmas. I couldn't believe no one had a bandaid of any kind. Of course I also couldn't believe they had a broken piece of glass being used as a shelf either. He's fine and Hobby Lobby changed out the shelf. Now Sam doesn't want to look at anything in that store again. Poor kid.

I normally don't fall for fat quarters due to the ridiculous price, but one of my current projects is fat quarter friendly and I can get two or so items out of one so it makes it not quite so cost prohibitive, plus these were on sale at Hancock Fabrics. There are some yard+ length remnants under the fats.















Now I'm tired and my head hurts from clenching my teeth most of the day.

Oh, I also picked up a bag making book. I'm having fits with my wool bag and I need help!

Quilting books

I recently celebrated my 141st birthday (it's a joke) and my mom gave me these three books.
















Tips for Quilters explains mitered corners better than any book I've ever seen. A very handy book that covers everything from selecting fabrics to removing spots. Some of it is just common sense, but some is just down-right funny.

Fat Quarter Small Quilts contains 25 projects. I like small quilts. These are all less than 3 feet x 3 feet.

Quilt Block Leftovers is my favorite. I always have at least one block left over and often find one or two blocks at estate sales or thrift stores. Now I have no excuse for not bringing them home with me.
