Happy Monday

Are you ready for the give-away tomorrow? I am!

We had interesting weather last night until almost midnight.

It rained and hailed for just a bit. It stopped and the sky cleared for a few minutes.

Then it rained and hailed a bit more.

Still not done, it rained and really hailed.

We didn't lose any windows and most of the trees just got shredded a little bit so we're counting our blessings. We received 1-1/2 inches of rain.

Counties around us had tornado warnings and watches until all hours. Some places were even expecting baseball size hail. Ouch!

I hope that everyone is doing well with this weather and that those in flood areas are high and dry.

Flower Power

I'm baaaack! I managed to work myself into a complete state of overwhelmed tizzyness, but I'm better now.

Mom brought me a bunch of flowers that she'd overbought and didn't have a place for them. We drug out the pots and cleaned them up and got busy planting.
Who can be grumpy with a daisy that looks like this?

So, now that I'm no longer having a 'moment' thanks to the help of my mother and copious amounts of paper and ink, let's get back to having fun. Shall we?

I have the drawing participants updated and plan to draw the winner Tuesday morning right after I get back from the plant sale at school.

Now to answer some questions since I'm too lazy to go back to the original posts.

Lea asked where I got the pear pin keep pattern. I found it at Sassafras Hill Primitives. I also snagged the trio of crows. Too cute!

Lea wanted to know how Horton Hears A Who was. I loved it! DH laughed so hard I almost made him get up and leave. It was really funny to see this 50 year old man belly laughing at a kid's movie.

Sue asked about chalk board paint. It's kind of like painting with pudding. It's really thick and smells to high heaven. I did two coats, one up and down, and one side to side. Otherwise, I really like it. We do math in the laundry room a lot. :)

Country Girl wanted to know if that was a bottle of beer on the table. Nope. That's his old DP bottle that he's spitting in. Yuck! The head behind him is an elk. Not my idea of decorating, but it's the man-den and I just turned him loose. I haven't seen Enchanted, but want too.

Suzanne of At Home with the Farmer's Wife, I received the cards you made and I love them! I'm in awe of your talent. I stink at stuff like that.

Well, I think that's all. I can't seem to concentrate with the weather radio screaming at me.

Have a blessed and happy week!

Is today a circle, square, or triangle?

I scratched out a calendar in the laundry room yesterday just to get a feeling for what's going on and why I'm feeling overwhelmed. Don't you just love chalkboard paint? I do.

I circled all of the dates for tests at school. All of the days that something important is happening are squared. Days that I have out-of-the-ordinary obligations got a triangle. This doesn't count the stuff that's going to come up between now and graduation.

In some ways it helps to get an idea of the big picture, because then I know where I'm at in this grand scheme. On the other hand, it can be intimidating.

I think I'm better off knowing whether it's a circle, square, or triangle kind of day.

Who's a turkey?

That would be me.

For some reason I've been in a foul (get it?) mood the last couple of days. I can't put my finger on any particular reason for being cranky, but I am and I'm trying to work through it. I can't seem to lay my hands on anything I need and that's just exacerbating my little problem.

I worked off a little frustration yesterday by cleaning out flower beds and losing a fight with the climbing rose. You should see the scratches. I look like 9 out of 10 rounds were won by a cat.

The drawing box is being added to daily. I hope the recipient isn't too disappointed when they open the box and see all of that junk.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful week.

Happy Anniversary

Tomorrow is our anniversary, but since it is also Easter, we're celebrating today. A Swiss mushroom burger while holding hands across the table at the local diner followed by Horton Hears a Who. He even bought me popcorn. If that's not love, I don't know what is.

Happy Anniversary honey! Here's to another 100 years.

Scenes from the sewing room

I made this little bag last night using the pattern hanging on the bulletin board. The pattern is leaving my house. I've seen better patterns for cuter bags. This is one I wish I'd opened before buying. Yes, the corners are square in mine. The rounded corner is an option and this pattern was out of options by the time I got to that part. Sewing should be fun, not frustrating.

How about a pear pin keep? A free pattern I might add. I made this with 100% thrifted materials (fabric, stuffing, poly pellets). It stands a whopping 11 inches tall. Now that's a pin keep!

I found this little table sitting next to a dumpster this morning. I'd have been crazy not to back up, make a U-turn, and go get it. It just needed a couple of screws to hold the top on. Silly people. I'm going to put it in the basement guest room as a night table. I think it's cute.

I stopped by a garage sale and found these sock stretchers for $1.

I finally found the rug beaters in the storage room and got them hung up. I just adore old stuff like this.

*** Give-away news:

I added a bunch more stuff today. :)

So far we have 50 signed up. That little number includes people, cats, and dogs.

If your pet isn't signed up, go ahead and do it. I'm all about having fun. Besides, this is a legit way to get your name in the pot a bunch of times. And yes, grand-dogs and cats count too.

Aunt Jo and the Peeping Tom

Last night about 11:30 I was in the sewing room, just sewing up a storm, and out of the corner of my eye I caught a flash of something at the window. I stood up and walked over to the window and low and behold, there was a face looking back at me.

My heart lurched and I think I might have wet myself. I was being peeped! I grabbed my phone and when I looked up he was gone.

And then I got to wondering...was he really up to no good or did he just want to see what the basement looked like?

You see, that's something I would do. If I saw a house with only basement lights on and could see in, I just might look. Yes, it's true. I'm a peeper. Of course if I actually saw a person I'd probably hurt myself running away.

I called my husband in NM this morning and told him I'd been peeped. Whoo boy! He flipped his lid and started yelling.

Evidently Oklahoma had a little problem keeping up with a couple of inmates the last few days. One had been found, but one was still running around loose. He couldn't believe I hadn't heard about it since I'd been out and about in the car. How did I feel about a convict peeping me? Surely I'd listened to the radio.

Uh, nope. While I was out running to and fro, I was rockin' to Vivaldi. He hung up on me.

I'm not afraid of a peeping Tom. I figure if he sees me naked and goes blind, well then he got what he deserved.

*****
Give-away update: 14 humans, 12 cats, 2 dogs have signed up. Annie, get your cats!

Ahem. I added three sets of knitting needles, a package of point protectors, a little bag of lace trims, and a how-to book today.

Tomorrow I'm going through another couple of boxes and putting duplicates in the give-away.

This is going to be big. Very, very big.

Thankful Thursday

Hosted by Julie at Another Chance Ranch.

Today I'm thankful for Spring Break.

I started off a little rocky with the stomach bug, but I've bounced back and I'm enjoying my days of crafting and being home.

Dressed up bulletin board

I have this old, yucky looking bulletin board and it needs to be dressed up.
Get a piece of quilt batting and cut it to fit just inside the frame. Like this. Now cut a piece of fabric of your choice just little bit bigger than the batting. You want it big enough you can stick it under the frame.

Take a butter knife, or a case knife as my granny called them, and start pushing the fabric up under the frame. I found it worked best if I started at one end and kind of ran the knife along under the edge of the frame. The fabric just slipped right in.

Just keep pushing fabric under the frame and go all the way around until it looks like this. Doesn't that look better?

Now, go forth and make it as foofy as you want it.
I decided to add green seam binding and a couple of muslin yo-yos because everybody knows seam binding and muslin goes with toile. It's just classy!

I only wish I'd thought to paint the frame first.

Come back later for my adventures with a peeping Tom and Thankful Thursday.

Nifty thrifty stuff

Thrifting was so good this morning that I had to go back this afternoon. LOL.

I found this table cloth for $1, which I brought home and...

turned into this bag. To me this just screams groceries and farmer's market. I think there's enough left to make a couple more bags. There's a good chance one of these could end up in the give-away box.

Then I found these buttons. I paid entirely too much for them, but maybe that was just the mood I was in today.

How about a box of snazzy American Needlework patterns for 2 bucks? A complete set I might add.

I also picked up a shuttle and bobbin for a treadle machine for, get ready it's just crazy, a nickle. Yes! Five whole cents. They had no idea what it was and when I told them they tried to raise the price. Nice try, but no dice.

*********

In give-away news, so far I've got 9 people and 4 cats signed up.

Oh, did you think I was joking about the cats?

Heavens no! I'm totally dead serious. Heck, let's throw your dog's name in too. I'd hate to be accused of discriminating against fur babies.

If you've already signed up and have a dog or cat that didn't get included, well sign up again. If we're going to do this thing, we're going to have fun at it.

Have a great one.

Happy Spring Give-away

Gather your fiends, uh friends, and tell your neighbors, we're having a give-away.

I've got so much craft stuff that I've decided to share the wealth and make some new friends in the process.

I put a priority mail box (11 x 8.5 x 5.5) downstairs in the sewing/craft room and I'm sticking all kinds of snazzy stuff in it.

As of this moment it holds an old flour sack with pink roses all over it, a couple of pretty fat quarters, a cute little pattern, an old quilt square, assorted yo-yos, a variety of buttons, and several packages of aida cloth.

I'm going to continue putting stuff in this box until it's full and on April 1st I'll draw the name of the lucky winner.

All you have to do to enter the drawing is leave a comment. Feel free to enter more than once. Heck, enter your cat if you want too.

What are you waiting for? Go!

The Leotard kids

My granny was a multi-tasking kind of woman. She took in ironing for people, baby-sat kids, and kept up with her own grandkids and family.

Granny's last babysitting job was the Leotard kids. No, that wasn't their real name, but close enough. Somebody has to protect the mean and ignorant.

I was five years old the last time she kept them. I can remember the last day just like it was yesterday. I hated it when the Leotards came over. When these kids showed up, cats would run and hide and the chickens would go get in the goose pen so the goose would protect them. Yes, they were that bad.

There were five of them, a couple of girls 6-8 years older than me, a boy about my age, another girl just younger, and a baby. The oldest girls were bullies and just plain mean. Their favorite past-time was holding down a younger kid and pummeling the crap out of them. I got more bloody noses and deep bruises from the Leotards than I've ever had in the rest of my life. I also had my first and only drug overdose at the tender age of 4, compliments of the Leotards, but that story is for another day.

On that last day, Granny had spent the morning washing quilts and had them hung out on the line to dry. The Leotards came and Granny immediately sent them outside to play.

Somewhere along the way, the oldest two girls got the idea to play with one of the quilts hanging on the line. Now everybody knows, you don't mess with Granny's laundry hanging on the line. Line hung laundry is close to sacred.

Not the Leotards. Everything was fair game. Granny caught them the first time and scolded them, but they weren't deterred. They just moved down the line to the other side of the lilac bushes, where the heaviest quilts were hanging and where Granny couldn't see them.

The girls took one of the heaviest quilt off the line, still wet from washing, and spread it out on the ground close to the goose pen. They got a bucket full of chicken feed and poured it in the middle of the quilt and waited. Eventually, the chickens decided it was okay to check out and descended on the feed. While the chickens were busy pecking, the Leotard girls rolled them up in the quilt. Twenty-two laying hens, rolled up in a wet quilt. I still can't believe how fast it happened and how they managed to get all of the hens in there.

I wanted to tell my granny so badly what was going on, but I'd already been pinched hard enough to leave a bruise, just for being alive. What would they do to me if I actually tattled on them?

Granny called all of us kids in for lunch and the chickens were promptly forgotten.

After lunch we went back out to play and I tried to keep from getting beaten up. We climbed the old apricot tree, swung on the rusty swing-set, and played hide-and-seek. Chickens forgotten.

About three o'clock that afternoon Granny called us to help her get the quilts off the line. I loved this part of wash day. I got to hold the pin bucket she kept her clothespins in and when she'd hand me a pin, I got to put it in the little bucket. I thought I was in high cotton.

One by one the quilts came off the line and were folded. Each child was given a folded quilt to take into the house and put on the cot in the kitchen until Granny decided where they belonged.

We finally got to the other side of the lilac bushes and my granny had the only conniption fit I've ever known her to have. She wanted to know who took the quilt off the line and why was it laying on the ground. I think she had an idea who did it, but wanted to see if they would confess.

Well, the Leotards, being the kids they were, pointed right to me. Yep, they stood there hand on hip, pointing their fingers straight at me and telling my grandma I did it. I was scared! I knew I didn't do it, but right then I would have admitted nearly anything.

Granny sent me to sit under the tree until she was finished and then she'd deal with me. I knew one of two things was going to happen. I'd either get switched or she'd make me go in the house to think about what I'd done and then I'd get switched. Personally, the thinking about it made the switching that much worse.

I can still hear what came next. The absolute terror-filled, blood-curdling scream that came from my granny as she unrolled that quilt to find twenty-two steamed, suffocated, very dead, laying hens.

In the 19 years I knew my granny, I never ever knew her to sit on the ground, except that day. She fell to her knees and sobbed. I don't know what hurt her more, the loss of her chickens, or the fact that kids would do something like that. Probably the latter.

She sent all of us kids in the house and called my grandpa to come home. I'd never seen Grandpa looking quite as grim as he did when he walked through the front door.

I don't know what came of the chickens or the quilt, but I know she never ever kept the Leotard kids again.

Tag...I'm it!

I've been tagged! T.J. over at Humble Origins got me again. She's a sneaky one. :)T.J. would like to know six non-important habits and/or quirks that make me tick.

I'm frightened to tell you people any more about myself than you already know for fear you'll discover what kind of a nincompoop I really am and never come back.

1. I love mustard sandwiches.

2. I hum to myself constantly.

3. I would prefer to be a night owl.

4. I have a tattoo and want more.

5. I'm the snarkiest person I know.

6. I have a real potty mouth and must gargle with Tidy Bowl regularly to combat the problem.

So, who to tag next...I pick:
Annie at Life Served Sweet, with a Little Whine (you can do it!)
Sue at Country Pleasures
Beemoosie at Quilted Together
Bev at Sew On and Sew Fourth
Nancy Jo at Nancy Jo
and You!

...And here are the rules once you've tagged:

1. Link to the person that tagged you.
2. Post the rules on your blog.
3. Share six non-important things/habits/quirks about yourself.
4. Tag six random people at the end of your post by linking to their blogs.
5. Let each random person know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their website.

Text stolen from TJ (she says it better than I could):
...Thank you for participating and for doing so with a positive attitude, a willful heart and a smile upon your face! Seriously tho', if you prefer to opt out - you can. Don't worry I won't call the Blog Tag Force or anything like that.

Thrifting

Just look at what I found at the thrift store.

I mentioned trying to find a new old ironing board and ended up with not only a great old ironing board, but also a table top board as well. Are you ready for the price? $2.50 for both!

I couldn't pass up the flour sack bag for 50 cents or the two old jars (both turning purple) for 30 cents a piece. One of the jars is mis-stamped. I'll take a picture later and show just how off it is.

I had a few minutes and went in the "yucky" thrift store and found 2 yards of green toile and another vintage tablecloth. Both in St. Patrick's Day green and $1 each.

Today was an excellent thrift day and I've enjoyed sloshing through the puddles and dodging rain drops.

Rainy Monday

A puddle in my backyard.

Happy St. Patrick's Day.

Today is a rainy, gloomy kind of day. Only I'm not going to let it be gloomy. After being sick the last few days I'm determined to have a sunshiny kind of day. I'm a firm believer in your day is what you make it and I'm making mine a double order of good day.

So far this morning I've been to the fishing hole and out to the lake. Nothing happening at either place. I hoped to catch a bird or two for the photo project. Maybe later.

I made one of the curtain panels for the man-den. I don't like it and will probably do something different. Maybe it would look better after the second panel is up. I don't know. I'm waffling on this at the moment.

I have a little sewing project to finish and stick in the mail. I have to get it done today. No procrastinating.

Plans to go thrifting are tumbling around in my head so I'll head off to do that in a bit. I need to see if I can find a new old ironing board. Mine seems to have walked off on his shabby green legs. In other words, we can't find it anywhere.

So, what kind of day are you going to have?

Scenes from the man-den

Despite me having a stomach bug, we got it done. The walls are painted. The carpet shampooed and furniture moved. The trophy mounts and assorted ugly things hung on the walls. He loves it and that's what I wanted.

If animal mounts bother you, look no further and for Pete's sake, don't leave me an ugly comment because then I'll be forced to hunt you down and pin your ears back.

Irky Saturday

Thank you for the well-wishes for my FIL. Right now he's in the hospital after collapsing three different times on Thursday. He's in his 80s and little things are hitting him harder than they once did. DH is going to NM (5-1/2 hours one way) to be at FIL's next doctor appointment on Thursday for a follow-up on his liver cancer.

We got all of the painting finished up in the living area. Half-Pint even helped by rubbing on the edge of a door I'd just painted. She's notoriously helpful that way.

I need to wrestle the vacuum and carpet shampooer down the stairs and get started. I just need to find my oomph first.

Painting in the basement

Real quick. DH and I are whipping out the paint job downstairs.

Here are a couple of before/after pictures.

DH's dad isn't doing well and we may have to make a trip to NM so we're trying to get all done that we can.

Enjoying my morning

Today is a glorious day! It smells so good outside. I took a quick trip around the yard to see what's happening.

The Bradford pear is now in full bloom compared to just the other day.

The rest of the daffodils are blooming and the hyacinth are beginning to open.

The forsythia has also filled out compared to the other day. Poor thing looks so scraggly. Considering he was just a little twig when I first planted him, he's doing well. We're up to three twigs now. LOL.

It's a great day to be alive.

Thankful Thursday

It that time again. Funny how Thursday rolls around so regularly. I didn't see who was hosting this week so I'm doing it on my own. Feel free to join in if you like. Leave a comment so we can visit you and see what you're thankful for this Thursday.

This week I'm thankful that Spring is finally on it's way. I'm thankful that I have eyesight which allows me to marvel in the beauty of Spring in Oklahoma. I'm thankful that I have the hearing that allows me to hear the birds singing their Spring song. I'm thankful that I can smell the scent of Spring on the wind.

Most of all, I'm thankful that God gave me another day to use my senses so that I could enjoy Spring.

Hump day

I'm so glad it's Wednesday. Only two more days of class and then we're out a week for Spring Break. While the kids I go to school with are partying hard, I'll be partying the old lady way, at home with the vacuum and a paint brush.

We need to paint the downstairs living area, shampoo the carpet, and move furniture in. I would really like to be finished with this before Monday. This includes having the mounts hung. It's the man-den after all.

We'll have to straighten out the upstairs living area and rearrange furniture because we're taking two pieces of furniture out to put downstairs. I plan to do this Monday and clean floor to ceiling. It needs it badly. Can you see the vicious circle begining to take shape?

Once the livingroom is done, I need to straighten out the computer room/office because the gliding rocker is going into the livingroom. I've got a stack of text books in the floor almost two feet high from writing that paper last weekend. It's a mess in here.

Then, it's time to change the bedroom furniture around again and hang the summer-time curtains. I also need to find a headboard. I got a bee in my bonnet last summer and sold our bedroom suit because the furniture was just too big for the size room we have now. Old houses have smaller bedrooms and need smaller furniture. I managed to replace everything with very reasonably priced antique pieces that fit the space much better. All but the headboard that is. I'll be hard pressed to find an antique queen-size headboard that I can afford. If I can find a full-size in good shape and reasonably priced I'd make it work.

I'm going to get my closet door hung in the sewing room. I'm not asking anymore. I'll just do it myself. I am perfectly capable after all.

If I can get all of that done I plan on having an extended date with the sewing machine.

Around the house

This is what's happening at my house. Blossoms and blooms!

This is the pear tree that we planted last year on our anniversary. Any day now it's going to open up and just be covered in these pretty little blossoms.

My forsythia is blooming too. I was so afraid it died last summer. After months and months of rain, we hit a dry spell and my poor bushes didn't adapt well at all. I need to cut part of it out, but those pretty yellow flowers give me hope that it going to live.

Of course there's always a little bad to go with the good.

This is the roof covering my front porch. See that peeling paint? It's got to be scraped and repainted this summer. In fact, all of the trim has to be painted and I have a really tall house. DH is too afraid of heights so I guess it's up to me. Anybody have a 40 foot ladder they can loan me?

I'm not certain it's 40 feet to the very top peak, but our 20 foot only goes about half way, give or take. I just know it's a really long way up there. Which also means it's a really long way down. I guess I could climb up on the garage, tie myself to the chimney, and scootch along the eves and paint. Hmmm.

Tiny pin-keep

Here I present the grand sum of my Easter decor and all of my crafting for the coming weekend. I bought this little cup at the thrift store and finally made a pin-keep out of it. I thought it turned out pretty cute. The little bunny is also a thrift store find.

I have to have a rough draft of my senior paper to turn in by 4pm on Monday. I'm not even close to being done yet and so I plan on spending tomorrow, pen in hand, writing a brilliant paper. Stop that laughing. I can hear you!

If you see me around this weekend, please tell me to get back to my paper.

How to thread a Pfaff 130

Nearly everyday somebody lands on this blog that needs to know how to thread a Pfaff 130. I hate to think that some poor lost soul isn't using their machine because they can't thread it.

Be sure to click on the pictures so you can really see what we're talking about.
My only request is that you don't make snarky comments about the amount of fuzz on the tension dial. I honestly didn't see it before I took the pictures.

Here we go!
If this is what your machine looks like then we're in business.

Let's follow the numbers and thread this machine.

Go under 1, around 2 right to left, down to 3 and under, right to left, from the right go into 4, but not through the curl of wire, go under 5 from the right, hold thread straight up and push against machine to slip into 6, through the top hole in 7 from right to left, down to 8, again push thread against machine and it should slide in there.

From 8 go behind 9 and finally through 10, the eye of the needle, from front to back.

All done! I hope this helps. If you have questions just leave a comment.

Quick and dirty - Three column template

Several of you expressed your deep, intense, burning desire to be cool and have a three-column blog. Here's what I did.

This isn't hard, but it can be frustrating as all get out. Grab a cup of tea and open a Word document or something you can type in. I used the "find" function in word and it really helped.

Okay, let's play in HTML.

I visited Tips for New Bloggers: Three Column Minima Template. Read it. It may not make any sense, but read it anyway. There are other templates available, but this is the one I use.

Follow the directions and save your template to your hard-drive.

Now, what I did is check the little box that says "Expand Widget Templates". Go ahead and check that box. You'll see why in a bit.

Right-click to select all and copy all of the HTML. Paste it into a blank Word document. This is where you're going to make your changes.

Now, work in your document (just leave the blog alone for now). This way if you have a melt-down or just don't think you can do it you haven't done any damage.

Follow along in the tutorial adding things as it tells you to add them. Be sure to add that one little piece ABOVE the part you find. Well, only if you want your posts in the middle.

The only part I didn't do, because my template didn't have this already, was the:

/** Page structure tweaks for layout editor wireframe */
body#layout #header {
margin-left: 0px;
margin-right: 0px;
}

I skipped it. Sometimes adding junk like this can really foul up stuff.

Make all of the changes to your HTML in your document and save it.

I went back to my blog and copied the HTML to another document for safe-keeping, just in case.

I deleted all of the HTML in the HTML editor and replaced it with the newly tweaked version from Word and saved it.

Simple as that. Now there are three columns and all of my widgets are in place. Hooray!

I adjusted my header width to accommodate the banner and monkeyed with the colors.

You'll end up with your profile on both sides, but it's easy to fix under "Customize". Just drag and drop stuff to move things around. Edit or delete if you wish.

It wasn't too traumatic. Give it a shot. If you need help holler and I'll see if I can help you.

Thankful Thursday

I regularly read Julie's posts at Another Chance Ranch. This week when I saw she was doing Thankful Thursday I decided to join.

I always try to be thankful for my many blessings, but as a human I often forget how fortunate I really am.

Today I'm thankful that I have the opportunity to go to college.

I realize I grumble about homework, fellow students, and professors, but I truly am grateful. My parents didn't attend college and neither have my siblings. At 41-years-old, I will be the first of my mother's children to graduate from college.

I'm also grateful that when I graduate in May we won't have a gazillion dollars in student loans to pay back. We've paid for it all ourselves and I've taken classes as we could afford them. It's taken me longer to get to the end, but it's going to be worth it in so many ways.

I'm grateful for my husband. Without his support I would have never made it this far.

Run over to Another Chance Ranch and see what other bloggers are thankful for.
